EQUIPMENT

THE SQUAT SUIT

The squat suit is designed to provide compression, allowing the lifter advanced stability throughout the lift. The compression increases stability throughout the spine and core, which can help reduce the risk of injury despite the weights usually being significantly heavier than the lifters raw weights. The elastic energy storage can assist the lifter, but the amount of assistance will rely on the lifters technical proficiency using the equipment. The suit is made of extremely rigid material varying from: polyester, canvas, or a blend with nylon and spandex. Suits are available in single-ply and multi-ply, from a variety of brands. These suits can be ordered custom fit or using the size chart provided by the manufacturer.

BENCH PRESS SHIRT (SINGLE/MULTI)

The original motivation to create the bench press shirt was to create a stiff and supportive shirt to reduce the risk of injury. Bench shirts can be made from a multitude of materials including: canvas, denim, polyester. They come in single-ply and multi-ply, with extreme compression they support the deltoid and pectoral muscles to handle extreme weights. The single-ply, as the name infers is one ply of material, the multi-ply offering multiple layers of material. Most single-ply shirts have a closed back, and most multi-ply shirts have an open back; however there are nuances to this and the legality will range from federation to federation. The shirt is no replacement for strength, they allow the lifter to maximize their technique to a much higher degree than raw. As the weight is lowered, the shirt stores energy, which is then released when the lifter pushes the weight up. Make no mistake, mastery of these shirts is extremely difficult and can take a very long time, but the used properly can be a work of art and give your CNS new adaptations that are unachievable lifting raw.

BAND SHIRTS

Band shirts have been called the evolution of the bench press shirt. Made of a knee wrap like material, the band shirt offers maximal support to the lifter and the most pop put of the bottom comparatively. These shirts are classified as unlimited in competition and also categorized that way on open powerlifting. These shirts are relatively new, and have a much different technical application than the traditional polyester bench shirt. World record holder Jimmy Kolb has stated that one of the noticeable differences he feels is the way the energy is stored from poly to band shirt, saying that the poly offers more energy storage by way of compression as opposed to the band shirt which feels like it stores energy more by way of elasticity.
