"GET UNDER MY WEIGHT, AND TELL ME IT'S NOT POWERLIFTING."
There's a saying that was widespread throughout the entertainment industry that said: "Controversy creates cash". Scot Mendelson exemplified this throughout his reign of bench press supremacy. Scot was in a horrific car accident that left him with a fused ankle and impeded a lot of his mobility, but Scot wasn't going to let that impede his journey to greatness as he would cement his legacy on the bench press.
Scot is the ONLY powerlifter to hold both the raw and equipped bench press world records simultaneously. In 2005 Scot would take his place at the top of the throne when he benched 715 lbs raw and 1008 lbs in a multi-ply shirt, securing both world records. This accomplishment stands alone to this day even 20 years later, which is a testament to how proficient Mendelson is on the bench press. He had the brute strength to capture the raw record and the technical precision to master the multi-ply bench shirt. His best competition bench in a multi-ply shirt is a mind-bending 1030 pounds. He also famously bench-pressed a freaking Harley Davidson in one of the greatest advertisements of all time.
Scot's personality was alluring, captivating, and controversial. He was brash and spoke his mind regardless of the setting, which only amplified his gargantuan towering presence. Consistently over 330 lbs bodyweight, Scot often competed at 330lbs+, making him an attraction on any platform he graced. His infusion of personality would be on display when he starred in the powerlifting documentary "Power Unlimited". He had some of the most memorable rivalries in the sport, with the most persistent contender being the Benchmonster Ryan Kennelly.
Unfortunately, in 2013 Scot would go viral for tearing his pec attempting to re-capture the raw world record. However, this wouldn't keep Mendy on the shelf for long as he would return to competition in 2014. His last meet was in 2021, and has also competed in arm wrestling on various occasions. He has been described by Davs Hoff as having "mongoloid strength", which really speaks volumes of his true strength considering the source is the greatest multi ply powerlifter of all time. He has been very open with his past run ins with the law and how that set him on the straight and narrow path, and the tribulations he has had to endure on his quest to be the best. Mendy also has a sister, Shawna Mendelson-Curry who is a world class competitor in her own right.
He owns Mendys Gym in California where they offer a variety of services. He also used the newest band shirt technology to create the MENDY bench shirt. In recent times Mendy has chosen to downsize a bit for his health and longevity. As the sport of powerlifting continues to evolve, we must look back and honor those who laid the foundation for the sport to reach new heights. There's a lot of extremely strong and talented bench press specialists in the world, but there's only 1 Scot Mendelson.
